page 50 chapter 6 "I think someone should smash Cole's head against a sidewalk so he knows how it feels." -Peter Driscal Peter said this while holding the feather because he was angry at Cole for making him have speech coordination problems. This is very harsh coming from the victim but I would be angry too.
peter was jest really mad at Cole I don't blame him I would be mad too if that ever happened to me. but one question why did Cole do that. it is like he has a problem with everyone....
I agree with you Cahntal, it does seem like he has aproblem with everyone. I wonder how or if he will be able to change. I think he is hurting himself more than he is hurting the others around him.
“Great then get rid of me” Page 55 This quote stood out to me because it sounds like Cole doesn’t care where he goes. He just doesn’t want to go to the jail.
“Honey, you’re hurting him,” -Cole’s mother trying to dissuade his father from beating him any further. Pg.55 Cole’s mother had only said this once during his many beatings. His father immediately stopped only because these four words. If she had tried to stop him earlier in Cole’s life, she could’ve prevented all the terrible paths Cole chose. If he had lived in a better home environment, the story would’ve radically changed. He would’ve never beat Peter or robbed any stores. From what I’ve learned, it only takes a few seconds and a few words to prevent bullying and all the problems that follow.
That is a very interesting insight. I too wonder what would have happened if his parents had treated him differently. Do you think his behavior is all due to the way his parents treated him? Does that mean it really is his parents' fault?
Cole's trauma seems to play a large in his choices and mistakes. His parents have caused plenty of damage to him. He is still a human being, though! Meaning, he is still responsible for his choices. I can now see that his mistakes and choices aren't all influenced from his trauma.
“If you go to jail, I won’t bet a nickel on your future.” Pg. 57 Garvey said this to Cole after a Circle Meeting, the meeting when they were discussing sending Cole to an isolated island. Garvey isn’t much of a supporter of jail; he believes that people should heal, rather than getting punished; he thinks that people come out of jail even worse than they are already are. I think that this shows that Cole needed to make a choice for what path he was going to go down.
“All you care about is you” page47 The Circle of Justice Meeting. Cole’s dad is talking about Cole saying “we devoted our lives to Cole…” Cole said that because Cole’s dad doesn’t care about him, what he does to him, or he doesn’t care about anyone else. I think Cole is right because Cole’s dad is a jerk.
Chapter 6 Page 47 "All you care about is you" i chose this because he thinks that his parents don't care about him and only care about themselves, when actually they really care a bout him.
"You do know that banishment is much harder than any jail cell, don't you?" Pg.57 Garvey said this to Cole when they decided he goes to the island for a whole year. Cole didn't think there was a point of going to the island until Garvey told him to try and cheat the cold.
Chapter 6 “Garvey smiled knowingly. “Go ahead and try it. Try manipulating a storm lying to your hunger. Try cheating the cold.” Pg. 57 Garvey said this to Cole. This quote means a lot to me because it’s really deep.
"I think someone should smash Cole's head against a sidewalk so he see's how it feels." -Peter Driscall page 50
When Peter said this the whole room was shocked and so was I. I was really interested in the book once I heard this because I knew something dramatic would happen after that.
“Did you hear him lie tonight when he was holding the feather” Cole asked Garvey. “He wasn’t the only one” Garvey said, heading for the door. Page 52 This quote tells me that Cole is upset with his father for lying. Then Garvey told Cole that he can’t be that upset because he lied too.
all you care about is yourself! page 47 i think cole said that because he was mad and tired of his dad acting like he was a king and treating cole like dirt

Are you sure they really care? I'm sure they do care a little, but I get the impression that his parents don't care as much as they could.
