  1. "You live.Die.Then rot. Death was part of living" pg 83 -Cole thought of this. Cole had finally understood what Garvey meant when he said "life is a circle". I feel like Cole has finally understood the meaning of life.

  3. “The power to choose was real power, not the fake power of making others afraid.”
-Cole speculating about his own decisions. Pg. 83
Cole had FINALLY realized his own mistakes. He seemed to regret them. With death at his doorstep, he is starting to think about his life and how he affected his peers. Cole realized that fear is not the way to control people. His actions from using this fake power affected him worse than his victims. I am glad Cole is finally realizing what he has done and how insignificant his existence really is. He knows his victims are presumably safer and in better conditions than he is.

  4. “You live, die, and rot, then something else lives, dies and rots.” Pg. 83
Cole thought this when he was realizing what life was. What I think this shows Cole is starting to change considerably. He is starting to understand the circle of life differently. Finally, I also think that when Edwin was a teenager he went through similar experiences as Cole, at his home and on the island.

  6. Chapter 10 page 82
“they hadn’t deserved to die” the baby sparrows were in the nest and in the storm the tree got hit by lightning and the nest fell and 2 of them died and the other 2 were hurt. Before the nest fell Cole was thinking of how to kill them. But after they died he felt really bad and thought a lot about life.

It was the first time he cried in the book because he doesn't care about things most of the time.

That quote really speaks to because it is very deep and it explains the circle of life.

  9. “Cole’s eyes grew moist”
This quote stood out to me because this is the first time in the book Cole isn’t selfish and is actually caring.

  10. "Yes, death was a part of living." pg 83
While Cole was lying there thinking about the dead sparrows, he knew one day his own body would die. Though, he was okay with it, he knew that's the way the world worked.

    1. For him it was easier to eat the worms. For me It would have to been in some tough circumstances for me to eat a worm.

  14. Chapter 9 pg. 74.
"Why did it matter anymore if he died?" Cole in pain was breaking and was thinking no one cared about him so he honestly stopped caring if he died now. I think he was at the peak of his breaking point and he just wanted to die now and then.
