  3. "you weren't the one who hit me." -Cole Matthews pg.121
Cole had said this to his mom when she apologized to him about everything. This was very meaningful because his dad has been beating him since forever and he's kinda like forgiving her and telling her she's not really at fault and he's had so much horrible trauma and yea.

“The bear didn’t try to hurt me” Cole said.
This quote tells me that Cole has realized that the bear only attacked him in self-defence. Also because in the end, the bear came to Cole, stood over him and showed him trust in his eyes.

  5. Chapter 14 Pg.121
“Your father carried too much baggage from the past-baggage he never dealt with.”
Said Cole’s mother when she was explaining how she took a wrong turn in life. Cole’s father beat Cole when he was a younger. Cole’s grandpa would beat Cole’s father when he was younger as well. What I think this quote means is that Cole’s father was never able to give up the past, and he let his past affect Cole, which led to Cole’s troubles.

  6. "Iv'e quit drinking". Page 121.
This quote speaks to me because Cole's mom is finally safe from her husband beating her and i think she want's a fresh start with Cole. Because she doesn't have to be scared because her husband is in jail.

"He just whips me 'cause he's mad."
Cole said this to Garvey. He said this because he was answering why his dad hits him.

  9. "Your father isn't a bad person, but when he was younger, he had parent who would beat him for everything he did. That's all he ever knew. When I saw him doing it to you, I kept telling myself things would get better. Drinking helped me ignore reality." Pg 121
Cole and his mother were having a deep conversation about his father, on how and maybe why he beat Cole.

  10. Edwin offered a hand and helped him up. Cole fought the urge to hit or shove the elder"
-Edwin demonstrating how much Cole's attitude has changed to the Circle Members.. Pg. 128
Edwin showed us how drastically Cole's arrogant and angry demeanor has changed. Cole has gained respect and some restraint from his dire experience on the island. He regretted what he did on the island and I am glad he is realizing the chances he has wasted. He also finally realized the Circle members want to help him, not isolate him.
