'' we've always wanted the best for Cole ''
I think Coles dad just said that to make it sound like hes a good dad to Cole, but before Coles dad finished his sentence Cole interrupted and said '' you drink until you cant stand up, your gone all the time. a devoted parent doesn't whip his kid until a shirt cant hide all the bruises''

  2. “Cole must go to jail and get anger counseling.” Page 46
This quote tells me that quite a few people want Cole to be sent to jail.
Also, that Cole needs to realize that he’s done many bad things and not everybody will think he’s innocent.

"Coles chest and legs. Blood crusted his elbows and knees, and his dry mouth kept him from swallowing. Why did Cole want to go to the island instead of prison???

    1. Great quote. It showed that he wasn't ready or prepared for the island. Cole wanted to go to the island instead of the prison, to try to get a reduced prison sentence if he were to go onto trial.

    2. I think Cole thought it would be easier than it actually was.

  4. “This was all somebody else’s fault.”
-Cole after attempting to escape the island and having returned to the burned shelter. Pg.45
Cole seemed to refuse that he caused his own problems. He refused to take responsibility for his actions and instead faulted others for them. I think he needs to face and solve his own rage and desire to hurt others. He needs to think before he does anything.

“That’s bull!” Cole shouted suddenly, although he wasn’t holding the feather.”
    - Cole hadn’t liked what he dad had said about devoting their lives to him.
Cole must think that his dad doesn’t care about him at all. Cole said his dad beat him and left bruises.

  6. “I’ll teach you to be afraid of me.” Pg. 45
Cole said this to the spirit bear when the animal walked away. I think Cole thinks he is stronger and more important than the spirit bear, so he thinks he can do anything he wants. I think also that the spirit bear is going to be a big part in the story, and help him fix his problems.

  7. “I’ll teach you to be afraid of me “–Chapter 5 Page 45
This quote tells me that Cole doesn’t like when people aren’t scared of him, because I feel like if they aren’t he feels very uncomfortable around them and starts having freak attacks and starts to yell out problems with his life.

  8. "Keep staring, i'll kill you." pg.44
Cole had said this to a spirit bear. This tells me he has no mercy. I don't think he cares about anyone or anything anymore.

  9. Page 45. “If I ever see you again, you’re dead. Ill teach you to be afraid of me.” Cole was cold, angry, and wanted to find the flames from where he burnt down the shelter. When he reached the island again he saw a spirit bear staring at him. He threatened to kill it he grabbed a knife thingy and the bear ran away. I think Cole just needs someone there for him 24/7, like Garvey or someone like that. If I was in his situation I would probably want someone there for me.

“A devoted parent doesn’t whip his kid until a shirt can’t hide all the bruises!”
    -Cole Matthews 2001
In this line Cole is disagreeing with his father after his says “His mother and I have devoted our lives to him, but he—“after that his father is interrupted by Cole who leads to this line.
This line is powerful because it further proves that he was abused and that could have led to the bullying of Peter Driscal and therefore his father lead him through the wrong path and almost to prison.

    “That boy is dangerous.”
Peter’s lady lawyer said this during a meeting. This quote speaks to me because it is true. Cole is dangerous.

    1. I agree that he's dangerous because he's beaten up many people and have gotten into so much trouble.

    2. It also shows that someone needs to take serious action soon. Not just deciding or bringing up new punishment ideas.

  12. “We can’t risk his release”
    Page 46
This quote stood out to me because the whole community at the circle of justice was saying Cole should be sent to jail, he’s a risk to their children and their community and should get anger counseling. All of the people that were there were not afraid to say what they think with Cole sitting there.

  13. "In that instant, Cole realized his mistake." Pg 41
Cole was cold and numb after coming out of the water, he needed a shelter to keep him warm. He then realized he didn't have a shelter anymore because he got mad and set it on fire.

  14. next time he might kill someone page 46
i think cole is just full of rage and has no way of getting it out so he bullies others but i don't believe he would ever intentionally kill someone

I chose that quote because I think that he’s kind of dangerous too.

  19. "A devoted parent doesn't whip his kid until a shirt can't hide all the bruises". Page 46.
This quote stands out to me because this tells me that him and his father don't have a good relationship and that Cole just wants a better relationship with his parents.

"keep staring, I'll kill you" that would be sad if he did kill the bear
