  3. "Hang in there, Champ! Hang in there!" a voice sounded. Pg. 99.
Cole is going back to the city, to the hospital. Cole is in a little boat with Garvey and Edwin. Garvey keeps telling him to hang in there and Edwin is driving the boat.
I like this part because Cole is actually being cared about.

  4. "Mine," he grunted. "That's mine." page 89
Cole realized that food is energy and he wanted to live so badly.... so he ate his puke picking fish from the puke until it was all gone.

  5. "Before the end of life he had seen beauty". pg.97 chapter 12. Cole had seen the beauty of nature and he felt very content with life now. If he died he wouldn't care cause he's now happy with life because he now knows what is life and what true beauty is.

  6. “Mine,” he grunted. “That’s mine.” Pg. 89 Chpt. 11
Cole said this to seagulls, that were about to eat his puke. He thought to himself that “food was energy, and energy was life.” He ate the puke himself. I think that this showed just how desperately Cole wanted to live; at whatever measures needed. He also ate a mouse, and countless worms and insects. If it were me in Cole’s desperate situation, I would probably eat my puke and the animals too.

  8. “The world would take him to the grave with a slimy goober on its face. Cole Matthews would still have the last word.”
-Cole preparing to spit at the Spirit Bear in his final act of defiance. Pg. 92
Cole was still defiant and sarcastic even when facing possible death. This is the moment Cole will soon transition to accepting death and realizing all the beauty he ignored and destroyed. I thought he had learned to respect and fear nature from all his consequences, yet he still kept his cynical self. I was surprised how he still wanted the last word, even when facing a dire situation. Later in the story, Cole had another chance to spit at the Spirit Bear, but realized the creature had trusted and even seemed to have respected him.

  9. “Food was energy, and energy was life.”
    Chapter 11 page 89
In this chapter Cole kept saying this, he saw the birds who fell out of the nest and felt sad for them because they fell out of a tree they couldn’t find their mother and they had no food. Then that’s why he kept saying this because he wanted to live.

  10. “I am okay” Chapter 12 page 102
He was dying but he accepted his death. Cole was being saved by Garvey and Edwin and he was delirious and thought they were seagulls biting at him. They took him to the hospital and Garvey was like “you’re not okay” and then Cole was like “I am okay”.
I think this quote means a lot because Cole has changed a lot since the beginning of the book and he is starting to see the beauty in life. He is becoming a better person.

  11. Chapter 11
“He jerked his arm at the gulls. “Mine,” he grunted “That’s mine.” Pg.89
Cole said this to the seagulls because they were eating his puke. His puke has fish bits that contained energy and he was desperate to live. After when he was beaten by the Spirit Bear he wanted to die, but after when he thought about it he was scared.
    Chapter 12
    “Hang with me Champ.” Pg.99
Garvey said this to Cole while he was on the near edge of dying. Cole thought it was an illusion but it wasn’t.

“He was spitting at more than the spirit bear. He was spitting at his life.
This quote tells me that if Cole was going to die, he wanted the last word. Also, that he is starting to look at the spirit bear as his own life. When the bear was ignoring him he thought of his parents. When the bear was watching him Cole thought of him as everyone staring, and judging him. Lastly, when he was spitting at the bear, he was spitting at everything and everyone who has ever hurt, ignored or judged him in his life.

  13. "The Spirit Bear raised its head slightly and sniffed the air with a long curious breath, then it started forward. This was how the first attack should have ended". Pg.92.
This is the part of the book were Cole decides he wants to live but at that time he decides the is no point in suffering any longer and he just wants to be put out of his misery. But when the spirit bear doesn't attack him he wants to live.
"The world was beautiful. Yes, the world was beautiful!. Pg 96~97.
In this part of the book Cole finally realizes the world isn't that horrible which he had thought before.

  14. Chapter 11
"He wanted the satisfaction of watching this last moment." Pg.92
When the spirit bear came back, Cole thought it was over. He then spat at the bear to know he had the last word.
    Chapter 12
"He's been attacked by a bear."
After Edwin and Garvey found Cole, they quickly took him to get medical help. Later they thought Cole was hit by a tree, but then the nurse showed them all the bite and claw marks.

  16. "He was spitting at more than the spirit bear, he was spitting at his life." -Page 92 Chapter 11
When I saw that Cole said this it really made me feel bad for him. Because if you think about it, Coles life is horrible. People hate him, his dad abuses him, and maybe he just does all these bad things because he thinks about his anger when he does it. You cant blame him for what people do to him.
